Best Family-Friendly Activities in Bend, Oregon

High Desert Museum

If you do one indoor activity in Bend with kids, make it the High Desert Museum. Situated just south of Bend on Highway 97, this incredible 135-acre indoor/outdoor museum brings Central Oregon's natural and cultural history to life in a way that captivates every age group. Live birds of prey, river otters, a porcupine, and more inhabit wildlife habitats, while indoor exhibits explore Native American history, the Oregon Trail, and the geology of the high desert. The Ponderosa Playscape is the newest addition to the museum, with a large outdoor and climbing area designed to help kids interact with every stage of a ponderosa pine tree’s life.

Plan to spend at least half a day (it's bigger and better than most visitors expect!), and kids rarely want to leave. Widely considered one of the best family activities in Bend, Oregon, it's an absolute must-visit.

Float the Deschutes River

The classic Bend summer experience and one of the most beloved family activities in Central Oregon. The stretch from Riverbend Park to Drake Park is gentle, scenic, and manageable for families with kids of all ages. The float takes about 75–90 minutes at a leisurely pace, and the shallow, calm water makes it ideal for younger swimmers. Rent tubes or paddleboards from Tumalo Creek or Sun Country Tours, and use the Park & Float Shuttle ($5/person) at Simpson Ave & Bradbury Way to avoid the parking scramble. Go early on summer weekends and beat the rush!

Best for: All ages. Toddlers do well in tubes with a parent; older kids and teens can go independently.

McKay Park, Miller’s Landing & Shevlin Park

For a slower, unstructured family day near the water, these parks are local favorites.

McKay Park sits right along the Deschutes River with a sandy beach area and shallow splash zones that are perfect for younger kids. Arrive before 9AM on summer weekends to claim your spot before the crowds arrive. Early mornings here are truly magical!

Miller’s Landing is a recently renovated, riverfront park with a large grass area, sand box, watercraft launch area (including ADA accessible options), and river access via steps and ramps. Grab treats from Sister’s Coffee or M’s Bakery in the Old Mill, then walk or bike over for an extra layer of fun.

Shevlin Park is a nearly 1,000-acre natural area along Tumalo Creek with forested trails, picnic areas, and a creek that's perfect for splashing and cooling off. The trail network winds through old-growth forest with mountain biking routes, a 6-mile loop, and a trail that follows the creek for 2.5 miles. Lots of options for all ages and abilities.

Lava River Cave

One of the most unique family adventures near Bend! Open May 15-September 15, Lava River Cave is a mile-long lava tube (2.2 miles roundtrip) located about 12 miles south of Bend in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. You'll descend into a volcanic cave system that stays a chilly 42°F year-round, making it a perfect escape on a hot summer day. Plan to reserve a ticket a week in advance, grab a recreation pass, and bring a lantern or headlamps to light your way.

Best for: Kids 5 and up who are comfortable in dark spaces and on uneven terrain. Bring warm layers as it's cold, regardless of the temperature outside.

Wanderlust Tours

Bend's most beloved local tour operator offers guided experiences that are fun for the whole family. Their cave tours take you through Central Oregon's volcanic lava caves with knowledgeable local guides, while their canoe and kayak tours on the Cascade Lakes are perfect for families wanting a guided paddle experience. Sunset tours and volcano tours round out a lineup that makes it easy to experience Central Oregon beyond the usual trails. Wanderlust Tours is especially great for families who want the insider experience without the logistics of planning it themselves.

The World's Last Blockbuster

The last remaining Blockbuster Video on the planet is right here in Bend, Oregon. Kids who've never seen a video store will be fascinated, and parents who grew up in the 80s and 90s will be hit with a wave of nostalgia. Browse the shelves, take the obligatory photo, and grab a movie for a cozy night in at your vacation rental. This one is a Bend rite of passage for the whole family.

Tumalo Falls

Just 12 miles from downtown Bend, Tumalo Falls is a stunning 97-foot waterfall tucked into the Deschutes National Forest and one of the most popular family hikes near Bend, Oregon. The trail to the base is short and accessible with views right from the parking area, making it ideal for families with younger kids. If you want more, continue up the trail for views from the top and deeper into the ponderosa pine forest. Parking fills up fast on summer weekends. Grab a $5 Northwest Forest Pass (available at the parking area), and plan to arrive before 9AM or after 4PM to avoid peak crowds.

Downtown Bend & Old Mill District

No family trip to Bend is complete without stopping into both of these areas. Downtown Bend has locally owned boutiques, bookstores, art galleries, restaurants, and more. Enjoy a meal at the iconic Pine Tavern or Bend Brewing Co (both have amazing river views), grab dessert at Goody’s or Bonta Gelato, and don’t forget to swing by the Leapin’ Lizards toy store.

The Old Mill District, set along the Deschutes River and featuring the landmark smokestacks, includes local shops like Vanilla, Dudley’s Bookshop, and Budd + Finn, plus national favorites like Anthropologie, lululemon, REI, and Sephora. Browse the shops, then get a bite to eat at one of the riverfront restaurants. Don’t miss Sweet Tooth Candy Shoppe, a favorite with kids and kids-at-heart.

Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Bend, Oregon

Bend's restaurant scene is top notch and the good news for families is that many of the best spots actively welcome kids. Here are our current favorites:

On Tap — This outdoor food cart lot is a family dream: multiple food options in one spot, a grassy outdoor space, live music (check their events calendar!), and room for kids to move around. Something for every picky eater with no reservations required.

Crux Fermentation Project — A sprawling outdoor space with fire pits, food trucks + a restaurant menu, and some of the most creative beer in Central Oregon for the adults. The huge yard gives kids room to run while parents relax. On-leash dogs are welcome too!

Jackson's Corner — A Bend local favorite for casual, high-quality family dining. Great breakfast and lunch options, a relaxed atmosphere, and a true neighborhood feel that everyone will love.

10 Barrel Brewing West — A Westside institution with a large patio space that works well for families. Good food, great beer for the adults, and a lively atmosphere that's forgiving of the usual family chaos.

Best Easy Hikes Near Bend, Oregon for Families

Bend is surrounded by incredible trails, and many of the most beautiful ones are fully accessible for families with young kids:

Deschutes River Trail — Miles of relatively flat trail winding along the river right through town. Start in the Old Mill and enjoy a paved 1/2 mile walk to Farewell Bend Park, which includes a large grassy area and playground. Continue on toward the Bill Healy Bridge and you’ll find a sandy beach for splashing before you make your way back to the car.

Sparks Lake — Ray Atkeson Loop Trail — One of the most beautiful easy hikes near Bend, Oregon and accessible for all ages. With both a paved and gravel option, this trail around stunning Sparks Lake on the Cascade Lakes Highway has jaw-dropping views of South Sister and Broken Top. The first ⅓ mile to a viewpoint is paved and flat, perfect for young hikers and strollers. If you’re looking for a longer (a bit more rugged) hike, you can keep going for a 2.5 mile loop. Park in the Sparks Lake Day Use Area (a $5 pass can be purchased on-site), and don’t forget to pack a picnic!

Pilot Butte Trail — A moderate paved trail to the top of a cinder cone in the middle of Bend with 360-degree Cascade views as the reward. It's a manageable hike for most kids, but bring a stroller or plan to drive to the top if you’re traveling with younger children.

Riley Ranch Nature Reserve — This trail system on the northwest edge of Bend offers Cascade Mountain, rugged cliff, and river views with 1.57 miles of soft surface trail, perfect for kids. Dogs and bikes are not allowed, which keeps it peaceful for young kids and families who prefer a quieter trail.

Tips for Planning a Family Trip to Bend, Oregon

A few practical notes from our local team before you go:

Book early. Summer is Bend's busiest season and the best vacation rental dates, restaurant reservations, and guided tours fill up weeks (sometimes months!) in advance. If a summer trip is on your list, start planning now.

Get out early. The most popular trails, parks, and river spots fill up fast on summer weekends. Arriving before 9AM will make a significant difference in your experience.

Bring layers. Bend's high desert climate means warm days and cooler evenings, even in July and August. Pack a light jacket for everyone in the group.

Rent bikes. Many of our vacation rentals include complimentary bikes, and Bend's Westside is incredibly bikeable.

Check recreation pass requirements. Several popular sites, including Lava River Cave, the Cascade Lakes trailheads, and Tumalo Falls, require day passes or recreation passes. Check the
US Forest Service website before you go to avoid surprises at the trailhead.
